  • Depending where you are, he could get gigs at parties hosted by promoters who normally throw parties at bars and clubs, but just aren’t necessarily at the bars and clubs. Small festivals and shows happen at certain venues and are put on by a lot of the same promoters. And depending on the scene, certain bars/bar owners DGAF about what’s legal and would hire an under-aged DJ, if it meant the bar made money.

If he’s just starting out, I’d recommend he build a name by taking small gigs at schools, private events, and even house parties, if just to get experience playing to a crowd and to build a buzz. At the end of the day, a lot of bar/club owners only care about their bottomline, regardless of the talent behind the decks. I’ve seen DJs at major clubs get tampons thrown at them for being so bad, yet if they brought in a healthy following, it doesn’t even matter.

I would tell him to talk to his school and see if he can offer services for some student functions. Beyond that, I would tell him to look into avenues that do not involve age-limit venues, like podcasts, daytime parties, etc.

Frankly, if he’s young and building the skills, then this is a prime time for him to build a following that he can take into his adulthood. Seen many local success stories start off as the high school kid who built a solid foundation from his classmates.

    It’s also cool you’re a supportive parent.

I started DJing about a year ago on a weekly basis for a local dance class – they accept anyone inside over 16 so I was fine. Through that, people at school learnt I was DJing (I DJ’d all the school Disco’s for the last 3 years.) and through that I have now done a few private parties (I did a 50th last week), just from people at school recommending me/booking me. I have done no advertising (yet), nor do I have a website (under construction). But I have a regular gig, earn money, and have managed to avoid trying to DJ in clubs until I am 18 – which I am now.

Besides, where I live there is only 1 club and I wouldn’t want to tarnish my reputation my DJing there. It has been voted one of the worst clubs in Europe – let alone the UK… 🙂

I’m moving soon though – to a bigger city with lots of clubs. Time for some promo and a few house parties I think. 🙂

As someone who just spent the last 2 months booking artists, one piece of advice I would offer is to not ACT like a teenager. As I am promoting my festival, I was willing to consider booking requests from artists of any age. The requests I received ranged from vary professional to informal inquiries, but the younger the artist, the less professional the requests were. One from a 16 year old literally had one line “you still Bookin fer DIs” (that is a copy and paste). I responded and asked for a more formal booking inquiry and information about him and he sent back a link to his Facebook page… I looked through about 10 posts and all of them had at least 3 f-bombs.

I am not saying you kid is a terrible sh!t like this guy, but you could use this time as a learning opportunity to teach him how to network, act in a professional manner, and sell himself like an adult. It will certainly help him a lot in the future.

As far as gig ideas; festivals, block parties, car shows, birthday parties, grand openings, school events, and a lot of others are good for younger djays.

Bear in mind Martin Garrix was 17 when he first played Ultra.

He’s 19 now. Anything can happen.

I’d have him stick to school functions and house parties so he can keep working on his craft. There’s plenty of time to be in clubs in his future. Enjoy being a kid while you can.

I was mobile Dj’ing from like the age of 15 ! As weird as this sounds it was so legit.

My dad was always with me so often people thought that he was the official DJ and i was the helper, but the truth is he didn’t know his cue and play buttons from the cross faders !

However his music knowledge was golden and together we both improved, sealing Giggs every week ! The only thing i regret is that my mic control didn’t improve… at like 15+ I hated using the mic in front of 100’s of people and is something i would recommend you encourage your lad to do (depending which route he plans to take) but it can only be beneficial either way.

Your son should have good crowd reading ability and DJ skills by the time he is 18 and ready to hit the clubs !

    Good luck man.

P.S unfortunately we are not blessed with Dutch blood 😉 haha

My son is a 14 year old DJ and he goes by the name DJ Mickey Breeze he has been DJN since he was 12 he is 14 now. He post some of his stuff on YouTube and on Sound Cloud and has had paying gigs some of every where. He has done Sweet 16’s, Weddings, Birthday Parties, Fashion Shows etc, etc. He conducts himself like a pro!!!! I helped him get business cards and banners with his pictures and his info and sometimes you he does a freebie in order to just get the recognition. He is self taught and he can play a couple of other Instruments. He also produces beats for local rap artist. He says that this is what he wants to do for the rest of his life, so I am teaching him to HUSTLE, GRIND and STAY HUMBLE right now and never stop having the Thirst for knowledge because he is so young and this DJ market is really competitive and oversaturated. He always says to me “Mom as long as I can do a job I love, I will never have to work a day in my life”.

Thought it would be interesting to see who everyone's top 3 favourite DJs are behind Avicii (if Avicii is your favourite). Might open the door to DJs some have never heard of if there's a pattern in the music taste. Mine would probably be Martin Garrix, Alesso and Axwell.
